REQUIREMENT FOR DRIVING TEST
You need a valid Texas learner's permit or provisional license to take the DPS-authorized DPS driving test at ATX Driving School in Austin. A provisional license is required for people under 18. If you are under 25, complete an approved driver’s education course and bring your completion certificate. The Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) course certificate is required for anyone under 25. Bring all necessary documents on test day, including your permit, ID, and certificates. ATX provides a registered vehicle for testing, but confirms availability at first. Check ATX’s guidelines for COVID-19 safety, as masks or vaccine cards may be needed. With these requirements met you’re ready for your test!

Without completing driver's ed, taking a driving test is possible. But you have to follow some limits based on your age:

25 Years Old and Older: If you’re over 25, it’s not required, but you still need to complete the ITD course.

The DPS driver test in Texas takes hardly 15 to 20 minutes. This duration may vary based on the specific requirements of the particular site and the individual’s performance. During this time, the examiner will assess your driving skills.
If you fail the exam, you'll be advised to improve the areas. After that, you can reschedule but must wait for at least 24 hours. You'll be allowed to attempt three times for the driver's license test within 90 days.
The same-day road test is not possible in Texas. You have to wait at least 24 hours to reschedule the exam. But you may need to book the slot for that. If you get a free slot, then you can retake the exam.
